Child Soldier

about

I trawled the internet looking at images of child soldiers. All of the faces were African or Asian. That isn't quite the whole of it.

lyrics

The Lord Mayor had a parade; local children were invited.
Most celebrated carnival, but some celebrated battle.

Children in uniform, groomed to go to war. Their drums, flags and bugles still nothing more than toys.
Children in uniform, taught how to march. Perhaps one day there’ll be crosshairs trained on their heart.

The miniature soldiers and Royal Marines looked solemn and self-important.
The weight of military tradition pressed down on their young shoulders.

Children in uniform, groomed to go to war. Their drums flags and bugles still nothing more than toys.
Children in uniform, taught how to march. Do they have a target tattooed over their heart?

They tried their best to march in step as the band tried to hold the beat.
The paper dragon following them shook his head at their conceit.

Children in uniform, groomed to go to war. Their drums, flags and bugles still nothing more than toys.
Children in uniform, taught how to march. Perhaps one day there’ll be crosshairs trained on their heart.
Children in uniform, groomed to go to war. Their drums flags and bugles still nothing more than toys.
Children in uniform, taught how to march. Do they have a target tattooed over their heart?

I understand music to be something that gets beneath the surface and speaks of clarity and authenticity. With the lyrics, I look for metaphors and parables that chime and occasionally gently nudge. I hope you enjoy. ... more
