Sailors Sail Away

about

Plymouth UK is a garrison town. Sailors and marines come home, stay a while and then go again, often for months. In times of peace, they usually return again, but even so, for many the time apart is painful.

lyrics

A young woman sat on a bench by the foreshore.
Her face was turned towards the sea.
Beside her a small boy was hugging her tightly,
as the frosty cold morning weaved silent misery.

As I watched from my window her shoulders were heaving.
I looked down at her and out across the Sound.
She stifled her tears as her lover was leaving,
ignored by the strollers and gulls and the sea.

The little boy pressed his face to her shoulder.
She wrapped him more tightly in her thin leather coat.
They embraced each other as the minutes passed slowly,
awaiting the ship taking their future to sea.

She leapt to her feet as the ship rounded the point.
It drew ever closer as she waved frantically.
That lovely grey monster was cleaving the water,
re-armed and victualled, seeking savage victory.

The young woman picked up the boy from the cold bench.
On her hip he was carried as the frigate approached.
Her ringlets shook as I watched from my window.
My eyes filled with tears as she gestured farewell.

Between Ash and Asia buoys the ship found the channel,
as it passed within yards of the audience ashore.
The men on board stood stiffly at ease,
refusing to answer the woman’s silent “Please!”.

A young woman sat on a bench by the foreshore.
Her face was turned towards the sea.
Beside her a small boy was hugging her tightly,
as the frosty cold morning weaved silent misery.

about

Brendan Shoreland Plymouth, UK

Creativity arises at the confluence of experience and personality. I have always hoped that my songs can help people who are stuck ... like I was. People who are lost ... like I was. I understand music to be something that gets beneath the surface and speaks of clarity and authenticity. With the lyrics, I look for metaphors and parables that chime and occasionally gently nudge. I hope you enjoy. ... more
