about

This track is a product of personal experience. It took several decades to assimilate and process that experience. Apparently, that’s normal.

lyrics

That’s What Predators Do

You told me that you loved me as often as you could.
You said that I could trust you; that I probably should.
You promised that you’d always be my very best friend;
your protection was something on which I could depend.

But you were quietly waiting, biding your time, waiting for the moment, feeding me a line.
The predator plunged, ‘cos that’s what they do.
You swept down and took me from above and behind, like an owl with a shrew.

You stole away my senses and I thought you were amazing.
But you should have helped my parents with the child they were raising.
Sexual abuse wasn’t in their field of view; I regret that I still blame them for not having a clue.

All I had to do was everything you told me to and all I had to be was everything you needed from me.
All I had to say was nothing to anyone; that’s what you forced me to agree.

I kept your secret safe for decades too long;
when I remembered what was real you were well and truly gone.
At last I tasted freedom tinged with guilt and with shame,
until with help I realised that I carried no blame.

All I have to do is leave you back in yesterday.
All I have to be is anything I choose today.
all I have to say is heartfelt truth in my own way.
